Planetary Shield Generator
Defense Facility
They can create Planetary Shields on planets to resist attacks from space. Massive amounts of energy are required for a Planetary Shield. If the shield becomes ineffective, it will leave the planet exposed to serious threads from space. Additionally, the number of Shield Generators that can be built on a planet is limited. Planetary Shield can only resist damage from space, it cannot defend ground damage.

Summary

The Planetary Shield Generator is a defensive facility providing a shield that covers a planet partially. The Planetary Shield Generator will absorb surplus power from the planetary energy grid, similar to how a Accumulator would. The absorbed energy is first used to initialize the shield generator, and after the necessary energy was stored to complete initialization any additional energy is then stored to act als a buffer for the actual shield. Planetary shields absorb fire from Dark Fog Space Units, which depletes the internal energy buffer. Upon depletion, the planetary shield will vanish until the energy reserves are restored.

Trivia

  • The maximum number of Planetary Energy Shield Generators is limited to 80 per planet.
  • If two generators are placed in sufficient proximity their coverage areas will meld together rather than creating a simple overlap, increasing coverage considerably.
  • Planetary Shields repel incoming Relay Stations. The actual altitude of the shield is irrelevant, it will repel the relay as long as it is present.
  • The planetary Shield will initiate at 1.44 GJ of stored energy, providing itself with a low altitude shield to prevent its own destruction. After 2.88 GJ of stored energy the Shield generator is fully initialized, providing a Planetary Shield of full size.
  • Energy absorption from shields takes higher grid priority than the charging of Accumulators, regardless if placed or charged via Energy Exchanger.

Player Tips & Tricks

  • Landings of Relay Stations can be prevented with just 8 shields minimum. There are multiple arrangements that achieve this.
  • For the achievement A.T Field a minimum of 16 Shield generators is required. (needs further confirmation if this is the true minimum)
  • A Geothermal Power Station placed on a Lv.1 Core Drill (remains after clearing a Dark Fog Base) will deliver enough energy to fully maintain the idle consumption of a Planetary Shield Generator + some extra.
